SOUTH KOREA- DUAL FUNCTION OF A BEE (APIS CERANA) INHIBITOR CYSTINE KNOT PEPTIDE THAT ACTS AS AN ANTIFUNGAL PEPTIDE AND INSECTICIDAL VENOM TOXIN

Paper prepared by Hee Geun Park, Seung Su Kyung, Kwang Sik Lee, Bo Yeon Kim, Yong Soo Choi, Hyung Joo Yoon, Hyung Wook Kwon and  Yeon Ho Jec, Byung Rae Jin

Highlights

  • The cDNA of bee (Apis cerana) inhibitor cysteine knot (ICK) peptide (AcICK) was cloned.
  • AcICK binds directly to fungi, but not to Gram-negative or Gram-positive bacteria.
  • AcICK exhibits antifungal activity.
  • AcICK is a bee venom component that exhibits insecticidal activity.
  • AcICK acts as an antifungal peptide and insecticidal venom toxin.

Abstract

Inhibitor cysteine knot (ICK) peptides exhibit ion channel blocking, insecticidal, and antimicrobial activities, but currently, no functional roles for bee-derived ICK peptides have been identified. In this study, a bee (Apis cerana) ICK peptide (AcICK) that acts as an antifungal peptide and as an insecticidal venom toxin was identified. AcICK contains an ICK fold that is expressed in the epidermis, fat body, or venom gland and is present as a 6.6-kDa peptide in bee venom. Recombinant AcICK peptide (expressed in baculovirus-infected insect cells) bound directly to Beauveria bassiana and Fusarium graminearum, but not to Escherichia coli or Bacillus thuringiensis. Consistent with these findings, AcICK showed antifungal activity, indicating that AcICK acts as an antifungal peptide. Furthermore, AcICK expression is induced in the fat body and epidermis after injection with B. bassiana. These results provide insight into the role of AcICK during the innate immune response following fungal infection. Additionally, we show that AcICK has insecticidal activity. Our results demonstrate a functional role for AcICK in bees: AcICK acts as an antifungal peptide in innate immune reactions in the body and as an insecticidal toxin in venom. The finding that the AcICK peptide functions with different mechanisms of action in the body and in venom highlights the two-pronged strategy that is possible with the bee ICK peptide.

POLAND- QUALITY OF HONEYBEE DRONES REARED IN COLONIES WITH LIMITED AND UNLIMITED ACCESS TO POLLEN

POLAND- QUALITY OF HONEYBEE DRONES REARED IN COLONIES WITH LIMITED AND UNLIMITED ACCESS TO POLLEN

Paper prepared by Krystyna Czekońska, Bożena Chuda-Mickiewicz and  Jerzy Samborski

Abstract

Older larvae of honeybee drones are fed with a diet containing pollen. It is not known how pollen deprivation during the larval development of drones might affect their reproductive quality. This study investigated ejaculation ability and semen quality in drones reared in colonies with limited (LP) and unlimited (ULP) access to pollen. Access to pollen was limited by pollen traps. Drone brood rearing was not instantly abandoned in colonies with limited access to pollen. Colonies from the LP group reared drones with smaller mass, which ejaculated in fewer numbers and released smaller amounts of semen. The LP and ULP groups did not differ in semen quality as judged by the concentration, number, and viability of spermatozoa in ejaculate. It was found that access to pollen during larval development directly affects the reproductive quality of drones.

SPAIN- STARTS THE SECOND EDITION OF THE GALICIA BEEKEEPING COURSE

A business training course started  yesterday with  25 students, ready to learn techniques related to beekeeping. This is the second time that is given, after a successful first experience of Limia Xinzo late spring. In this first course came out the first  class of professional beekeepers in Galicia.

Disastrous Beekeeping season in Slovenia

BeeTIME - 19. august 2014 - 21:05

This year Slovenian Beekeepers only think they extract from beehives were tears.

In the past five years on average, there was 32 kg honey per hive, but this year just 7 kg (15,5 pounds). This is a big blow for Slovenian Beekeepers, because of that Beekeeping association send to the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment initiative to help.

They said, “Thus, poor harvests this year, we cannot remember nor beekeepers with 40 or more beekeeping experience“.

Reason for bad harvest are the adverse weather conditions, there was just not enough sunny days, etleast in the one-piece.

Beekeeping season in Slovenia

Honey harvest in past 5 years

2014: 7,03 kg (15,5 pounds) / hive

2013: 35,79 kg / hive

2012: 15,02 kg / hive

2011: 36,26 kg / hive

2010: 32,33 kg / hive

In normal beekeeping seasons, they produce around 2.000.000 kg (4.409.245 pounds) of honey per country. So this represents less than a quarter of this year.

The consequence of small quantities of high-quality Slovenian honey means stores will need to import more foreign honey.

Help by Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment

At the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment, they responded very quickly and decide that beekeepers with 20 beehives or more will get financial help in the amount 5 € per hive and beekeepers with less than 20 beehives will get oxalic acid for free.

SPAIN- CASTILLA Y LEÓN IS SUING CANTABRIA FOR A HONEY ORIGIN DENOMINATION

The Junta de Castilla y León, through the Ministry of Agriculture, legal proceedings to contest that had the Government of Cantabria for the registration of the protected designation of origin 'Miel de Campo-Los Valles'. This measurement is taken after the regional government has exhausted administrative remedies and consider this quality figure does not include the enclaves of Castilla y León and the regions of the border Community Cantabria complying with the provisions on the requirements of designation.

Ohje suosittaa kokeilemaan lasten virusinfektioiden aiheuttamaan, lyhytaikaiseen yskään hunajaa.

CHILE- LAUNCHED A NATIONAL CAMPAIG TO PROTECT THE HONEYBEES

The NGO Plan Bee launched an initiative to help with food. Some of the recommended plants are lavender, rosemary, oregano, mint, chamomile, basil, marigold, roses, pennyroyal, strawberry, lemon and tomato. It is also advised to keep a bowl of fresh water near the plants for the bees to hydrate. Antonio Bogdan, director of the organization invited all Chileans to create an unforgettable spring for bees and for all. "We can create life and food sources for pollinators, thus avoiding long trips to our beloved bees, and with this we create an awareness at country level. Everyone can bring something to life and thereby help ourselves. The time is now, "he said.

Mitä yhteistä on Tove Janssonilla ja mehiläistarhaajilla?

Hunajalla höystettyä - 18. august 2014 - 14:49
Ullanlinnankatu 1 -osoitteesta löytyy Tove Janssonin
muistolaatta.
