Polen de abeja

En primer lugar acotemos el término “polen de abeja”.

Para empezar el polen, a secas y como tal, son las micropartículaspulverulentas que contienen los gametofitos masculinos de las plantas con semillas. En un símil zoológico (en vez de botánico) serían los espermatozoides de una determinada especie vegetal de reproducción sexual. Estas partículas además de la función biológica propia de su ciclo vital en cada especie pueden servir de alimento a especies distintas, entre ellas la de las abejas. Pero para ello han de transformar ese polen recolectado, madurarlo, con el fin de poder aprovechar sus nutrientes. Así, las abejas en su metódica recolección de néctar floral y de polen incorporan este último elemento en los panales, agregan una serie de enzimas digestivas y tapan las celdillas con el fin de que pasado un tiempo y tras la acción de esas enzimas se obtenga un producto que sirva de alimento, especialmente destinado para sus larvas.

Así pues, el “polen de abeja” es el polen floral transformado por acción de las enzimas de la abeja… no es que las abejas “tengan” polen.

Sobre este producto, una vez recolectado por el ser humano, se han hecho descansar infinidad de propiedades nutritivas y no me refiero a las referentes a la de las larvas de las abejas sino a la nuestra cuando es consumido como alimento o complemento. Cuando digo infinidad, digo bien porque su consumo se ha relacionado con ciertas propiedades antioxidantes, anti cáncer, antienvejecimiento, contra la diabetes, ser adelgazante, vigorizante sexual, atajar problemas de colesterol, menstruales, de depresión, anemias, alopecia, artritis, reuma, etcétera (piensa en el problema de salud que quieras, seguro que alguien en algún momento le ha atribuido al polen de abeja la propiedad de mejorarlo). Hay cientos de páginas web (aquí solo un ejemplo típico) que obnubiladas por el buenrollismo natural nos invitan a consumir este producto como la enésima panacea para no importa qué dolencia o enfermedad.

¿Cuánto hay de cierto en todas estas magnificas alegaciones sobre el polen de abeja?

Pues la verdad que poco o nada, al menos desde el punto de vista serio… otra cosa serán todos aquellos planteamientos alternativos, naturistas y eco-molones. Para que tomes nota, en Europa aun no se ha admitido ninguna de las alegaciones que se ha solicitado para este producto a la Autoridad de Seguridad Alimentaria (EFSA). A día de hoy, este organismo ha recogido 6 posibles solicitudes para hacer las correspondientes alegaciones sobre sus propiedades nutricionales en la salud:

  • Como agente inmuno-modulador gracias a su contenido en enzimas y vitaminas (que aun está bajo consideración por parte del panel de expertos).
  • Como agente antioxidante gracias a su contenido en vitaminas y selenio.
  • Como protector frente al estrés oxidativo.
  • Como protector cardiaco así como para controlar los niveles de colesterol y lípidos plasmáticos (bajo consideración).
  • Como ayuda para la función inmune (bajo consideración).
  • Como estimulante del apetito (bajo consideración).

En el único documento publicado hasta la fecha sobre sus presuntas propiedades, el panel de expertos de la EFSA sostiene que:

  • No está comprobada una relación causa y efecto entre la toma de polen de abeja y la protección del envejecimiento celular.
  • Ni sobre su capacidad antioxidante dado su contenido en antioxidantes o propiedades antioxidantes.
  • Ni sobre la protección del DNA, de las proteínas o de los lípidos frente al estrés oxidativo.

En lo que respecta al posicionamiento de las autoridades sanitarias norteamericanas, la FDA, sobre los usos que habitualmente se le atribuyen al polen de abeja entre quienes lo distribuyen ha hecho público este elocuente documento titulado: Algunos productos de polen de abeja para adelgazar son una estafa peligrosa en el que sin ambages señala:

Los productos que dicen contener polen de abeja en la etiqueta y que prometen ayudar a bajar de peso o a esculpir su figura podrían, de hecho, hacerle daño […]

Se ha descubierto que algunos productos de polen de abeja que se publicitan para adelgazar contienen ingredientes ocultos y potencialmente peligrosos que pueden ser dañinos para las personas con padecimientos tales como pulso irregular, presión arterial alta y trastornos bipolares.

La FDA ha recibido más de 50 denuncias de consumidores y profesionales de la saludsobre efectos adversos relacionados con el consumo de productos de polen de abeja para adelgazar contaminados. En las denuncias figura por lo menos un deceso, problemas cardiacos graves, dolor de pecho, palpitaciones, taquicardia (frecuencia cardiaca acelerada), presión arterial alta, convulsiones, pensamientos suicidas, ansiedad, insomnio y diarrea.

Además, muchos de los productos de polen de abeja para baja bajar de peso se publicitan como suplementos alimenticios que afirman curar o prevenir enfermedades y síntomas diversos, entre ellos la diabetes, alergias, la presión arterial alta y el colesterol alto. Por ley [tanto en USA como en la UE], los suplementos alimenticios no pueden afirmar que curan o previenen enfermedad alguna.

Los laboratorios de la FDA han analizado 15 muestras diferentes de Polen de Abeja Zi Xiu Tang de varios distribuidores, con fechas de caducidad y números de lote diversos.Todos los productos sometidos a prueba, entre ellos los que dicen ser “genuinos” y “auténticos”, contienen ingredientes farmacológicos que no aparecen en la etiqueta:sibutramina o fenolftaleína, o ambas.

Bien, dicho esto, puedes llegar a pensar que: a) eso es lo que pasa en Estados Unidos y, b) que eso pasa con el polen de abeja de una determinada marca y que el que tú compras en tu herbolario es “natural” y de absoluta confianza.

Bueno, eres libre de pensar lo que quieras, pero mi opinión es que este polen de abeja, como el 99,9% de los suplementos son ineficaces para todas las alegaciones que suelen hacer… ya lo adquieras en USA o en tu farmacia de confianza; y que además los controles a los que se están obligados los complementos alimenticios (y este es uno más) son terriblemente laxos, así que yo pondría en entredicho esa “seguridad” al respecto de que un determinado complemento alimenticio no lleve nada que no deba llevar o que no esté declarado. ¿Cómo sabes y porqué dices que tu complemento es seguro? Igual te interesa echar un vistazo a este post: ¿Te “alegras de verme” o acaso tomas fitoterapia adulterada?

Antes que preocuparse por la posibilidad de incorporar maravillosos complementos con asombrosas (y no reconocidas científicamente) propiedades más valdría ir zumbando a revisar nuestro patrón alimenticio, un patrón que bien articulado no precisa de todas estas zarandajas.

Abstract

Feral honey bee populations have been reported to be in decline due to the spread of Varroa destructor, an ectoparasitic mite that when left uncontrolled leads to virus build-up and colony death. While pests and diseases are known causes of large-scale managed honey bee colony losses, no studies to date have considered the wider pathogen burden in feral colonies, primarily due to the difficulty in locating and sampling colonies, which often nest in inaccessible locations such as church spires and tree tops. In addition, little is known about the provenance of feral colonies and whether they represent a reservoir of Varroa tolerant material that could be used in apiculture. Samples of forager bees were collected from paired feral and managed honey bee colonies and screened for the presence of ten honey bee pathogens and pests using qPCR. Prevalence and quantity was similar between the two groups for the majority of pathogens, however feral honey bees contained a significantly higher level of deformed wing virus than managed honey bee colonies. An assessment of the honey bee race was completed for each colony using three measures of wing venation. There were no apparent differences in wing morphometry between feral and managed colonies, suggesting feral colonies could simply be escapees from the managed population. Interestingly, managed honey bee colonies not treated for Varroa showed similar, potentially lethal levels of deformed wing virus to that of feral colonies. The potential for such findings to explain the large fall in the feral population and the wider context of the importance of feral colonies as potential pathogen reservoirs is discussed.

TOP STORIES Putting Climate Services Into Farmers’ Hands

As scientists have gained skill in seasonal climate prediction, the “push” to support decision making with climate information services has grown, as has the “pull” of user demand for these services as the climate changes. Combined with rainwater harvesting, agroforestry, livelihoods diversification and other interventions, climate information services can help farmers cope with the negative impacts of climate, and take advantage of good conditions by confidently investing in their fields. While their potential is great, however, climate services don’t yet reach most of the farmers who need them.

To raise awareness about this issue, IRI worked with the Climate Risk Management group of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security to produce a new animated video that highlights the importance of supporting smallholder farmers with climate information services in the face of changing climate.

Käypä hoito -suositus: lapsen yskään hunajaa

Uuden lasten alahengitystieinfektioita käsittelevän Käypä hoito -suosituksen mukaan lasten  yskään kehotetaan käyttämään hunajaa.

Suosituksen mukaan akuuttiin hengitystieinfektioon liittyvä, alle kolme viikkoa kest yskä johtuu pienellä lapsella yleensä virusinfektiosta. Lasten yskänlääkkeiden käyttöä ei suositella, sillä ne eivät helpota oireita ja voivat aiheuttaa sivuvaikutuksia.

Käypä hoito -suositus toteaa:

Hunaja saattaa helpottaa oireita yli 1-vuotiaiden lasten akuutin öisen yskän lyhytaikaisessa hoidossa.

  • Tutkimuksissa on käytetty hunajaa muutama millilitra tai 10 grammaa noin 30 minuuttia ennen nukkumaanmenoa.

  • Hunajaa ei botulismiriskin vuoksi saa käyttää alle 1-vuotiaille.

Suomalaisen Lääkäriseuran Duodecimin, Suomen Lastenlääkäriyhdistyksen ja Suomen Yleislääketieteen Yhdistyksen asettama työryhmä on laatinut lasten alahengitystieinfektioita koskevan Käypä hoito -suosituksen tuoreimman tutkimustiedon mukaisesti. Suosituksia laaditaan lääkäreille, terveydenhuollon ammattihenkilöstölle ja kansalaisille hoitopäätösten pohjaksi.

Mikä ihmeen verhoilijamehiläinen?

Verhoilija leikkaa lehden leuoillaan.
Kuulin lomani alussa, että mökillämme on todella paljon mehiläisiä. Oletin, että kyseessä olisivat hunajamehiläiset ja ihmettelin asiaa, koska en tiedä mökin lähellä yhtään mehiläistarhaajaa. Kun sitten pääsin mökille lomailemaan ja tilannetta tarkistelemaan, selvisi, että hirsimökkimme koloihin oli pesiytynyt jokin verhoilijamehiläislaji (Megachilidae). Nämä lähes mustat erakkomehiläiset ovat saaneet nimensä siitä, että naaraat leikkaavat kasveista lehdenpalasia, joista ne rakentavat toukille pesän. Tämän "toukkakopan" ne tekevät lajista riippuen maankoloihin, puunkoloihin, vanhoihin hyönteisten tekemiin onkaloihin jne.

Verhoilijamehiläinen kerää tähän lehtirakennelmaan mettä ja siitepölyä ja munii kuhunkin toukkakoppaan yhden munan. Toukka elää lehtikammarissaan kunnes on valmis koteloitumaan. Hienosta rakennelmasta kertoo mm. vanha Suomen Luonto -lehden artikkeli (7/1996)
Verhoilijamehiläiset tekivät heinäkuisena hellepäivänä paljon töitä. Vähän väliä ne kävivät leikkaamassa leuoillaan pihan horsmista puoliympyrän muotoisia lehdenpalasia, jotka ne sitten lennättivät pesäkoloon. Vaikka verhoilijamehiläiset ovatkin erakkomehiläisiä, ne pesivät kuitenkin samassa suurehkossa hirrenkolossa. Millainen lie käytävästö puun sisällä onkaan.

Horsma sai kyytiä.
Mehiläisten työtä oli hienoa seurata: ensinnäkin, lehden leikkaaminen oli todella taidokasta. Kesti noin kaksi sekuntia ja viuh - lehdenpala sujahti mukana pesään. Toisekseen, mehiläiset osaavat rakentaa lehdistä hienoja pesiä. Itse en hirren sisään nähnyt, mutta tästä kuvasta voi nähdä, millainen rakennelma toukalle lehdistä tehdään. Nämä erakkomehiläiset olivat erittäin rauhallisia – sain tunkea nenäni aivan niiden lentoreitille.





Erakkomehiläiset tärkeä osa pölyttäjäkuntaamme Suomessa on tavattu lähes 200 mesipistiäislajia, joista suurin osa on erakkomehiläisiä. Niillä on mitä erilaisempia pesäpaikkoja ja jokaisella lajilla on omanlaisensa pesärakenne. Suomen mesipistiäisistä noin 30 % pesii maanpäällisiin koloihin ja loput maahan, esim. hiekkapohjaan. Jos mehiläinen kaivaa pesän maahan, se estää hiekkaa romahtamasta erittämällä takaruumiistaan (jotkin lajit myös leukojen alta) eritettä, joka kovettaa pesäkäytävän.

Rakennetaan pölyttäjäpesiä
Vanhan puut, oksat ja koiranputket tarjoavat suojaa hyönteisille.
Erakkomehiläisten hyvinvointia kannattaa vaalia, kuten kaikkien pölyttäjien. Esimerkiksi hillan ja muiden metsämarjojen sadon kannalta luonnonpölyttäjät ovat todella tärkeitä ja niiden elinoloja voi auttaa rakentamalla pesäpaikkoja.
 
Innostuinkin mökin erakkomehiläisistä niin paljon, että rakensin sinne villipölyttäjille ”hotellin”. Ehkä riehaannuin liikaakin ja pihalle tulikin hiukan odotettua suurempi hotelli. Pölyttäjäpesien nikkarointi on hauskaa ajanvietettä, johon saa käyttää mielikuvitusta ja taiteellista silmää. Kohta on syksy ja hyvä aika kerätä kasvimateriaalia ym. ensi vuotta varten. Itse käytin pesän pohjaksi vanhan lavan, jonka täytin mm. kävyillä, järviru

okoilla, kaarnalla, kivillä, koiranputkilla, puuhaloilla ja muulla puumateriaalilla.

Itse rakensin suuren pesän, mutta niitä voi tehdä ihan minkä kokoisia vain. Jo pienikin pölyttäjäpesä auttaa luonnonpölyttäjiä!

Jim Coneybeare, second vice-president of the Ontario Beekeepers' Association,  said Ontario honeybees are currently experiencing "chronic insecticide poisoning" due to chemicals, such as neonicotinoids, sprayed on soy and corn, both leading agricultural crops in the area. As bees hover from plant to plant gathering pollen and nectar, the pollen transfers with it, thus completing an essential reproductive role in cross-pollination, according to Syngenta, a leading agricultural organization. "When you have the residue in your dead and dying bees and you have the residue in their food source, it's pretty well a smoking gun," Coneybeare said. Coneybeare - who keeps roughly 850 hives - compared the current state of the declining bee population with the tobacco industry 30 years ago. "There were all sorts of denials and campaigns to create doubt saying it couldn't be nicotine," Coneybeare said.

NEW ZEALAND- A NEW COMPANY IS RESEARCHING THE MEDICAL PROPERTIES OF KANUKA HONEY

New Zealand has the potential to harvest multi-billion dollar returns from pharmaceutical honey applications, says Dr Shaun Holt, founder of Bay of Plenty-based Honey Lab. The company focused almost exclusively on pharmaceutical applications for medical honey and bee venom, and devoted about 80 per cent of available funding to research, he said. "Our aim is to develop intellectual property in terms of product research that we can license to major global pharmaceutical companies," said Dr Holt, who was also an adjunct professor at Victoria University of Wellington. The company's products were produced from kanuka honey, rather than the manuka honey that is more commonly associated with medical benefits. However, Dr Holt said honey from both manuka and kanuka - which were largely endemic to New Zealand - contained significant anti-microbial qualities.

The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees, Inc., established by the American Beekeepers Federation  is offering five $2000 scholarships to apiculture graduate students in 2015. Due date for the applications: September 19, 2014

 

The Foundation is a charitable research and education foundation affiliated with the American Beekeeping Federation (ABF). The Foundation has benefited from a number of generous gifts, including the estates of Glenn and Gertrude Overturf and Margaret and Victor Thompson, and continues to be sustained by ongoing gifts from ABF members and other supportive individuals.

The Foundation Trustees have chosen to use a portion of these gifts to offer five graduate student scholarships to foster professional development for emerging apicultural scientists. The scholarships are available to all currently enrolled graduate students studying any aspect of honey bees, bee husbandry and/or the apicultural industry.

The purpose of the scholarships, in addition to providing modest financial support, is to allow the recipients to attend the 2015 North American Beekeeping Conference & Tradeshow at Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, California on January 6-10, 2015. Each awardee will be given a $2000 scholarship check. In addition the Foundation will cover all lodging expenses and up to $750 in travel expenses.

Graduate students enrolled in a University, either within the United States or internationally, are eligible to apply. The recipients will have an opportunity to meet other researchers and beekeepers and to present their research at the meeting. The Board of Trustees always looks forward to interacting with recipients’ and hearing about their research during conference.

Applications for the scholarships will be accepted until September 19, 2014.

Criteria:

  • Applicants should submit the following for consideration, as one collated PDF document titled “Applicantsname”.pdf, substituting the applicant’s actual name for “appilicantsname”:
  • A one-page cover letter from their University advisor outlining:
  • The student’s progress toward their graduate degree (Masters or PhD)
  • Tentative graduation date
  • Any other information about the student
  • Any information about their research that would help “get to know” the student.
  • The student’s curriculum vitae, or resume, not to exceed two pages.
  • A research proposal (not to exceed three pages), written by the graduate student. This proposal should:
  • Begin with an introduction to the research problem, followed by clear  goals and objectives that state the research questions and hypotheses
  • Outline specific research experiments the student is conducting for their degree
  • Describe research the student is planning to perform, or the progress the student already has made toward that research
  • Clearly state how the research benefits bees, beekeepers, and/or the apicultural industry
  • Discuss the methods that will be used to answer their research questions, and the expected results or results to date
  • Be written for a general audience.  The reviewers of the proposals are beekeepers that really want to understand the importance and implications of the research.

Recipients will be selected in October 2014.  Each chosen recipient will receive detailed information about the scholarship, travel arrangements and conference expectations in late October 2014.

The Board granted the help of National Beekeeping Programme (NAP) to the 129 farmers who had applied individually, as well as the 10 associations that applied for the same, as confirmed on Tuesday the Minister of Agriculture

Lämmin heinäkuu pelasti hunajasadon

Hunajasato on tänä vuonna vähintään kohtuullinen, sillä lämmin heinäkuu sai mehiläiset keräämään ahkerasti mettä. Sadon määräksi arvioidaan hieman alle kaksi miljoonaa kiloa, kun keskivertosato on 1,8 miljoonaa kiloa.

Leuto talvi oli mehiläisille suotuisa, mutta kylmän alkukesän vaikutukset satoon huolestuttivat monia tarhaajia. Myös mehiläisten parveilu, joka osaltaan heikentää hunajasatoa, oli poikkeuksellisen runsasta.

Heinäkuun helteissä mehiläiset pääsivät ahkeroimaan. Paikkakunnilla, joilla satoi sopivasti vettä, oli kasveissa riittävästi mettä. Paikoitellen kuivuus kuitenkin heikensi esimerkiksi vadelmaa, joka on yleinen mehiläisten mesikasvi.

Erot hunajasadossa maakunnittain ja myös saman kunnan alueella voivat olla suuria. Keskisessä Suomessa sato on tänä vuonna yleisesti parempi kuin esimerkiksi Kaakkois-Suomessa. Keskimäärin yksi suomalainen mehiläispesä tuottaa 35–40 kiloa hunajaa.

Karhut vakava ongelma

Karhuvahingot ovat tänä kesänä haitanneet aiempaa useampia mehiläistarhoja. Karhut ovat tällä hetkellä suurin ja vakavin ongelma Suomen mehiläistarhaukselle. Vahinkokarhut aiheuttavat mehiläistarhaajille paljon lisäkustannuksia ja -työtä.

Viime vuosina kotimaisen hunajan sato on ollut niukka tai korkeintaan keskiverto. Vaikka mehiläistarhaus kiinnostaa yhä useampia, niin pesämäärät eivät ole vielä kasvaneet niin paljon, että se olisi vaikuttanut merkittävästi kokonaissatoon.

Mesikasvit vaikuttavat hunajan makuun

Hunajan rakenteeseen ja laatuun vaikuttavat monet tekijät. Erilaisista mesikasveista syntyy erituoksuisia ja -makuisia hunajia. Kaikki hunajat ovat heti linkoamisen jälkeen juoksevia, mutta osa kiteytyy luonnostaan nopeasti ja osa taas hitaasti. Hunajantuottaja voi vaikuttaa hunajan rakenteeseen myös hellävaraisilla käsittelyillä.

Juoksevan hunajan voi pakastaa, jolloin hunaja on juoksevaa myös sulattamisen jälkeen. Kiteytynyttä hunajaa voi myös varovasti lämmittää vesihauteessa, jolloin se muuttuu takaisin juoksevaksi.
